Discolouration on the teeth not only spoils the aesthetics of the smile, but can also be a symptom of serious dental or gum disease. Therefore, they should not be underestimated. If you want to avoid unsightly discolouration, you should first start by following a few basic rules, which we discuss in our guide.
Avoid certain foods
Tooth discolouration isn’t just the domain of people who are poor at oral hygiene. It can be caused by eating and drinking certain foods. Red wine, of course, leads the way here, followed closely by coffee and tea. Foods such as curry sauce, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, beetroot, tomato sauce or tomatoes themselves, ketchup etc. also cause discolouration.
Use the right toothpaste
You can easily find special whitening toothpastes on the market, which can indeed be effective, but only for minor stains. Beware of toothpastes with a high fluoride content that may increase discolouration.
Take care of the health of your teeth and gums
This is the basis for a healthy and beautiful smile. Discolouration can be caused by disease, for example, caries or calculus. Therefore, visit your dentist at least once every six months for a dental check-up and for a so-called sandblasting of your teeth.
Stop smoking!
If you smoke cigarettes, cigars or chew tobacco, put an end to this habit as soon as possible. It is not only disastrous for your health but also causes unsightly discolouration of your teeth. A smoker can be unmistakably recognised by yellowish teeth.
Treat yourself at the dental surgery
If you have significant discolouration that cannot be removed with toothpaste or standard sandblasting, the only thing left is a professional dental treatment, for example with a laser. Consult your dentist – he or she will be sure to offer you an effective whitening method.
